Hand Blown Glass

The Glass Bubble Project specializes in creating unique works of art from recycled metal and hand blown glass. Our eco-friendly work appears in a variety of commercial and residential buildings from the Ritz Carlton hotel to private homes all across the country. View our Portfolio

We call our artwork "Clevetion Glass" which is the opposite of the dainty and fragile Venetion Glass from Italy. Our work is industrial and clunky, kind of like the way we see Cleveland -tough and durable. We spend as much time as we can scavenging through antique stores and scrap yards for interesting objects ensuring that every piece is unique and impressive. Read our Artist Statement

In addition to hand blown glass artwork, we also offer free public demonstrations, private studio time and glass blowing classes. Learn about Glass Blowing at GBP

Learn to Make Hand Blown Glass

The Glass Bubble Project is a glass blowing studio located in Cleveland, Ohio. The artists enjoy creating unique works of art from recycled metal and hand blown glass. Artist Mike Kaplan has been working with hand blown glass for over twelve years. A former art student at Kent State, Kaplan started his own glass blowing studio with the help of his friend Chris Topher in 1998. Together they taught themselves the art of glass blowing. Eventually they began creating hand blown glass lamps, hand blown glass sconce lights, hand blown glass chandeliers and hand blown glass pendant lights. Before long they were commissioned to create custom hand blown glass lighting for the bar at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Dearborn, Michigan. They are now one of only a handful of studios offering glass blowing classes in Northeast Ohio. They are constantly creating new works of hand blown glass art. Help find Morty the Rooster!

Morty is a rooster -- a small, solid black feathered cock -- and the mascot of The Glass Bubble Project, a group of artists and educators who operate a glass blowing studio in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood. According to Chris Tophier, a partner in the project, Morty turned up missing Saturday afternoon. Tophier and others said Morty was being his normal free-range self in the morning -- crowing and strutting proudly about the premises at 2421 Bridge Avenue -- but by mid-afternoon he was conspicuously absent. It is feared someone took Morty, as the bird was unusually friendly and allowed people to pick him up and pet him. Read More

Heat of The Moment - Cleveland Magazine, April 2010

Inside Mike Kaplan and Chris McGillicutty’s Ohio City studio, molten glass is transformed into one-of-a-kind pieces of art. The studio is housed in a renovated garage. The kiln is fashioned from an old oil drum, and the heat it pumps out not only melts glass, but it’s also used to whip up the occasional grilled cheese sandwich. The Glass Bubble Project’s Ohio City home isn’t your typical art studio, but glass blowing isn’t your typical art. No other medium finds artists facing down 2,000-degree temperatures to create one-of-a-kind bowls, vases and light fixtures. Read More
